UWE aims to provide students with wide ranging and developed study pathways and this pathway is one of our newest innovations. You may not have studied either Law or Criminology before starting your degree or perhaps you have studied one but not the other. This degree gives you the opportunity to study both subjects before deciding how you want to take your studies forward. If you want to qualify for a career as a solicitor or barrister you can, whilst still developing your knowledge and understanding of criminology. Alternatively you may decide to concentrate primarily on criminology, whilst still gaining some legal expertise. The Law degree at UWE is delivered by people who have expertise in a wide range of subject specialisms relevant to the study of crime, criminal justice and perspectives on crime and society. This coupled with the subject expertise which exists in the Department of Sociology and Criminology allows us to provide an interesting and varied degree programme which allows those who study here to achieve a breadth and depth of knowledge of law and criminology. Alternatively you can broaden your legal studies and study the subjects which allow you to become a solicitor or barrister.
Supported in your skills development by the University’s Graduate Development Programme you may wish to take a number of opportunities that exist within the Department of Law and in the wider university. You could volunteer to help in a number of criminal justice related areas, consider pro bono work or assisting in the Innocence Project where lawyers investigate possible miscarriages of justice.
With such a range of opportunities you should have a wide number of career opportunities open to you. If you decide to study a qualifying law degree you may become a barrister or solicitor after further study, at UWE, if you so desire. You could undertake further postgraduate study and become a researcher in the area of criminal justice or criminology. Many business and public service careers will be open to you. The award that you will gain on completion of your studies will reflect the relative balance between your two subjects. If you focus primarily on Law you will gain an LLB(Hons) Law with Criminology. If you concentrate on Criminology you will gain a BA(Hons) Criminology with Law. If you choose to divide your time and studies equally between the two subjects your award will be BA(Hons) Criminology and Law.
